Liverpool F.C. : A Repetitive Problem

A Recap

Going into the first game of the 21/22 season, the typical Liverpool fan’s mindset was filled with optimism, yet pessimism. With arguably the best starting 11 in the world, the reinforcements just are not up to par. Going from Mane and Salah to Minamino and Origi. Going from Fabinho and Thiago to Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain. From Trent Alexander-Arnold to Neco Williams. The depth of this squad just isn’t good enough in key areas. The past three transfer windows have been complete failures. The opportunity to build a dynasty after dominating world football for two years was missed and Liverpool have now found themselves in a challenging position.

As this is written, Liverpool (21 MP 45 PTS) sit 2nd in the Premier League table, 11 pts off of 1st place Manchester City (22 MP 56 PTS). What is perhaps most disappointing is the fact that Liverpool have the same amount of losses (2) this season as Manchester City. Draws against Chelsea (x2), Brentford, Brighton, and Spurs were all massive let downs in a title race where every single point counts.

All this being said, the Reds have certainly left their mark in the Champions League. Having been put in the “group of death,” Liverpool managed to win all 6 of their CL games, securing knockout qualification before the last matchday of the group stages. The Champions League seems to be the only road to a successful season for Liverpool, and with Serie A leaders Inter Milan in the way, the road might be a bumpy one.

Desperate Need for Signings

Since day one, it was obvious that squad depth was the main issue for Liverpool this season. When missing even one or two key players, Liverpool have struggled. What is most notable is Liverpool have won every game this season that Thiago Alcantara has started (which has not been often). Lacking an alternative ball dominant midfielder to Thiago and Keita has been a severe issue for Liverpool in recent years and it has certainly shown this season. Liverpool are in desperate need of a center mid that is confident receiving the ball under pressure and playing out from the back.

Furthermore, the Reds also need a forward that is capable of influencing a game when the likes of Mane and Salah are not at their best. In games like Chelsea (H), where the attacking players are off their game, an energetic presence off the bench is essential. Someone such as Luis Diaz, from Porto, would be able to fulfill this role nicely.

Even with the obvious signs of need, the feeling among Liverpool fans remains the same; signings are unlikely. Unless FSG decide to dig in their pockets a little, failure this season seems inevitable for Liverpool.
