What Else is coming to Denver this Offseason?

The Denver Broncos recently announced former Packers OC (2019-2021) Nathaniel Hackett as their new head coach going into the 2022 season. As a Broncos fan, I think I can speak for the whole fanbase when I say this is an exciting move. Mostly because of the potential packages that are included with the hire.

While writing this, the Broncos have the 5th highest cap space in the NFL following the trade of Von Miller to the LA Rams. With that being said, the Broncos certainly aren’t a team in need of strengthening in multiple positions. The main focus is, and has been for the last 6/7 years: quarterback. With the large cap space, a big move certainly could be an option, especially considering QB is the only real position of desperation. There are certainly plenty of options in free agency, such as Jimmy Garoppolo and Gardner Minshew. None of those names seem to be the right solution to Denver’s problems. Although I do know one big name that does a lot more than just solve your problems.

We all know Aaron Rodgers isn’t the type of guy that trusts very easily, but that isn’t the case with Hackett. With Rodgers looking to be on the move this off-season, you would think he’d prefer a destination with a few familiar faces and why not relink with your OC of the last two years?

The Broncos haven’t had any real stability in the HC position since John Fox, and even then, he was only in the position for 3 consecutive seasons (2011-13). Before the hire was made, there was one big aspect that Broncos fans wanted in their new head coach: an offensive mindset.

Defense hasn’t been a problem for the Broncos in recent times and it sure as hell isn’t right now. With the likes of Pat Surtain, Justin Simmons, and Bradley Chubb making plays, we just need an offense to capitalize on these plays and put the ball in the back of the end zone.

While stability has been lacking in the HC position, you could argue it’s even worse at the QB position. The Broncos have had 5 different starting QBs since Peyton Manning left, and none of them give that feeling of excitement that you look for in the most important position in football. Names such as Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Lock, Case Keenum, and others have been massively disappointing and just haven’t gotten the job done.

With a disappointing class of QBs in the draft this year, that doesn’t seem like a solution to the ongoing QB issue in Denver. Having drafted Trevor Siemian first round in 2015 to be the Peyton Manning replacement following that super bowl win, Paxton Lynch in 2016, and Drew Lock in 2019, it just hasn’t worked out in the draft for Denver in terms of QBs.

The biggest concern with the moves being made is the fact that it doesn’t look like we’re investing in the future. You look west to LA and see a young Justin Herbert on the rise and look East to KC where Patrick Mahomes has established himself as the best QB in the league right now, and for the future. The question remains: can the Broncos keep up over the course of the next decade?

The Broncos have the weapons in place in this offense with the likes of Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, and even Noah Fant & Tim Patrick. Not to mention Javonte Williams, who just had a great rookie season. The time for the Broncos is now, and I think Aaron Rodgers knows that. He’ll be licking his lips at the prospect of working with this offense in one of the most competitive divisions in the league.

The Broncos only have 2 super bowl appearances since 2000, which is massively disappointing considering the history of this franchise prior to the 2000s. Not to mention only one finish above 3rd in the AFC West since 2015. Those two super bowl appearances both came under Peyton Manning, who, in 2012, was brought in purely for that reason: take us to the super bowl. The aura around this potential Aaron Rodgers move almost gives a feeling of deja vu, and if it means a super bowl win, then I am all for it.

Oh, and if the weapons mentioned previously aren’t enough for you, a certain WR seems to be on the move away from Greenbay and I heard he’s got a pretty good relationship with a certain QB (on and off the field).
